Valve’s free-to-play MOBA saw 7,854, 998 unique players in April.
The MOBA market is currently dominated by League of Legends, as Riot have claimed in the past that over 67 million unique users play LoL every month. That doesn’t mean that DOTA 2’s achievement is any less impressive, however, as LoL is the only game to date to overtake WoW’s domination of unique users.
WoW saw around 7.8 millions users in April, but commentators have said their drops comes in the lull between expansions. With a new expansion allegedly in the works, the numbers are expected to spike at around 10 million upon announcement and release.
DOTA 2 has been at the top of Steam’s most played games for months, but this is the first time it has overtaken WoW in terms of player base. With DOTA 2 continually growing due to its workshop support, users are expected to keep on increasing.
